Leopold takes top spot

IT appears that Geelong football's list of premiership contenders has a new kid on the block.

Leopold stormed to the top of the GFL ladder and continued to defy the critics with a 10-goal thumping of injury-ravaged Colac, as fellow bolter Lara stumbled in the face of a Bell Park onslaught.

The Lions are among a group of five sides with five wins from the opening six rounds and are content with their work heading into the interleague break.

However, coach Aaron Greaves said complacency was not a word doing the rounds at Leopold Memorial Reserve.

"We're really happy going into the bye 5-1, it's a position we're happy with but I think our draw has been favourable and we'll have a couple of big tests after the bye,'' Greaves said.

"We see Colac as a side we're competing for a (finals) spot against and to perform that well was fantastic.''

Looking ahead to its next game in two weeks against St Mary's, Greaves said the Lions did not fear any side in the league.

"We genuinely believe there's not a side in the competition that we can't beat on our day,'' he said.

"It's a really big occasion for us.

"St Mary's is another big challenge for us. It's a Sunday game, you're on show, and I think it's an opportunity for us to step (up) and make a statement and gain some respect for our footy club.''

Meanwhile, Colac coach Tyson Hay blasted his Tigers after they succumbed to their fourth straight loss.

"We let ourselves down with lazy, unaccountable football and only the players can turn that around, it's all mental strength,'' Hay said.

The Tigers sit three wins outside the top five after battling injury and poor form in the opening six weeks.
